Dear Friends of Soul Food,

We are excited to be recruiting an experienced freelance charity consultant to help support and develop our Soul Food meals in Edinburgh. Initially this will be a 12-month contract between Soul Food and the freelancer, but our hope is that we can develop this work and role further so that this could become a permanent position. Could this be a position for you or someone that you know?

Currently we have 7 Soul Food meals in the city of Edinburgh and one in Livingston. Two of our Edinburgh meals are run and funded entirely by Soul Food Edinburgh, whilst the others are run in partnerships with churches and a school.

The consultant’s role will focus primarily on the two meals that we run as a charity. Helping to develop them and the support that we give to the guests who attend.  They will lead, support and grow the volunteer teams that host the meals and contribute any fundraising experience they may have to enable their continued financial stability.

The consultant will work alongside Soul Food Edinburgh’s Lead and will also relate to the trustee board, bringing insight and experience that will help us to develop the strategic vision of the charity.

Soul Food has been running as a charity for 7 years. We feel that now is the time to bring in some fresh vision and experience to help us as we develop our plans for the next 5 years. Many things have changed since we first began Soul Food, not least that we have negotiated a pandemic that meant we had to change the ways in which we worked – quite literally – overnight. In other areas relating to homelessness, things are even worse than they were. Weekly, we continue to hear stories of rough sleeping, endless waiting lists for housing, sanctions, food poverty, fuel poverty and a welfare system that often seems to punish, rather than support.

Through these meals that we offer, we long to be a place of genuine support and community, respite and refuge. A gentle space, where people are known by their names and are offered respect and kindness that can often be missing in an overloaded welfare system.

Although this position is freelance, it is important that the freelancer is someone who aligns with our values and holds a passion to engage in the injustices that so many people in our communities are enduring.

We are a Christian faith-based organisation. Due to this there is a genuine occupational requirement that the consultant is a Christian. For a copy of our theological basis – our heartbeat - please get in touch.

Kindest regards, Jenny
