Soul Food Edinburgh

'midwinter' by Katy Sawrey

We are always so excited to launch our Christmas card each year. For the last number of years, we have been fortunate enough to have artists either design or gift us a piece of their work (for a very small recompense) to use for the cards and to help us raise funds for our Soul Food meals.

This year’s artist is Katy Sawrey and the beautiful painting that she has given us to use, is midwinter.

Katy studied textile design at Central Saint Martins and then went on to become an abstract artist. Painting in her garden studio in Edinburgh, she mostly focuses on abstract landscapes. She draws much inspiration from the Scottish mountains and coastlines. Katy particularly enjoys capturing the ways that light creates shapes and colours across the landscape, making an atmosphere which changes depending on the time of day.  Using layers of transparent paint and geometric shapes, she creates something new and interesting in the finished piece. If you would like to see more of Katy’s work, you can find it here: www.katysawreyart.com. Via her website you can buy original art as well as limited edition prints. If you would like to see her work in person, Katy is currently exhibiting her Autumn Collection at Mayvn Café, 127 George Street, Edinburgh. This is a collaboration with International Justice Mission, where some of the proceeds from the sale of the paintings go towards their important work.

But back to Soul Food Christmas cards! We have printed the cards – postcard style- so that you not only have plenty of room to write your Christmas greetings on the back - but also - the fortunate recipient of your card has the opportunity to pop it into a frame so that it lasts long after the season is over. Or maybe you could put it in a frame and voila, a Christmas card and gift!

We know that not everyone sends Christmas cards, and so the beauty of this card is that it can be sent all year round, too. If you are anything like me (a bit of a stationary addict), a well-stocked stationary box filled with gorgeous cards, ready to send, is one of life’s joys!

The cards are available here: https://www.soulfoodedinburgh.org/shop. Choosing to buy your Christmas cards with us helps to provide meals and support for anyone experiencing homelessness, poverty, isolation and loneliness in Edinburgh and Livingston. You not only receive something beautiful and send something beautiful to your friends and family - but you also do something beautiful too. Just one pack of cards will cover the cost of 3 Soul Food meals. And that is beautifully, tangibly significant gift, this Christmastime.
